The Omnivore’s Hundred
I just came across something fun, sort of a game for food bloggers. It’s a list, put together by Andrew from Very Good Taste, of 100 things he thinks “every good omnivore should have tried at least once in their life.” It’s not meant to be a list of the world’s best foods; it includes strange stuff like whole insects. It’s just Andrew’s personal idea of the variety of foods that should be tried at least once during a lifetime. He calls his list The Omnivore’s Hundred, and I found it via Chocolate and Zucchini.
Anyway, here are his rules for the game:
1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment here at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.
Note: If you want to do this on your blog, I suggest you copy the list from the source code. That way you’ll get all the links Andrew has thoughtfully included to make it easy to look up any unfamiliar items.
The bolded items are the ones I’ve had. The crossed-out ones I probably wouldn’t try.
1. Venison(It was in third grade and I don’t remember what it tasted like.)
2. Nettle tea
3. Huevos rancheros(An old favorite I was just reminded about at I’m running to eat.)

7. Cheese fondue
8. Carp
9. Borscht(Blech! I hate beets!)

96. Bagel and lox(Not without cream cheese though.)
97. Lobster Thermidor
98. Polenta
99. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee(Seemed overpriced and overrated to me.)
100. Snake
Conclusions:
- I have lots of new tastes ahead of me.
- I’ll try practically any food. My only strikethroughs were the cigar in #36, the liquor absinthe in #73, and the sometimes-fatally-poisonous fish in #46.

Maria, where’s the photo?
Comment by Lulu
manju, I don’t have any really good reason except that when I trim my artemisia plant I get really sick of the smell and the thought of having it infused in a liquid makes me feel queasy. But I don’t know if that’s what absinthe actually smells like, so who knows?
Comment by Ivy
Most things are unknown to me. Have tried about 5% of the list.

You really need to try sea urchin roe fresh from the sea – it is one of the best foods ever. Agree with you completely about Blue Mountain coffee. It was a real disappointment. It was fun reading your list – thanks!

Hey, this was fun! I counted 47 things that I’ve tried. For #47, I don’t think that the bugs I inadvertently swallowed as a kid when I was riding my bike too fast downhill with my mouth open! Live and learn! The road kill, #75, made me say wince a bit. Haven’t tried that and don’t really want to! My daughter loves those Pocky snacks (#83), and just finished a package of them yesterday!

@Maria – here you go:

@Laurie – Despite my sea urchin sushi disappointment I’m very interested in trying it. Zoe talks about getting sea urchins off the rocks and sitting on the beach eating them. That sounds fun, although I know I’ll need help with the spines.
@Paula – I’ve never even heard of Pocky snacks.

I’m a food wimp I guess. LOL! And a vegetarian so I’m not gonna be trying a lot of that. ::shudder:: LOL! Lulu, I tagged you for a meme over at my blog if you want to play.

@Teresa – Yes, vegetarians were at a disadvantage with this list. Several commenters over at the original mentioned that. It’d be fun to see a “Vegetarian’s Hundred.”

This is a fun list. I was surprised that Clotilde was so anti-rootbeer. But, then, I definitely won’t be trying snake!
Comment by Lulu
Yeah, I’m always amazed when people don’t like root beer!

Wow~ You’re the first that I’ve seen that didn’t strike insects! I know I’ve eaten them – as in open mouth on a bike ride – but never intentionally!
Brave, very brave!
Comment by Lulu
Well, Katie, don’t congratulate me until you actually see me popping one in my mouth!
